Frutiger Aero is one of the aesthetics that inspired us to realize this media player interface for this massive mural in Berlin Kudamm, inspired by biophilic design and synesthetic perception. — Sofi Lee, a member of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute (CARI) was the first person to identify Frutiger aero, naming it after two major hallmarks of the aesthetic: the Frutiger family of fonts and Windows Aero, the design language of Windows Vista. Lee describes frutiger aero's key themes: bokeh, auroras, globes, and transparent materials, mirroring real-world objects. A nature-inspired aesthetic blending indoor and outdoor realms, symbolizing the smartphone-driven internet's transformation. Once distinguished from Y2K designs, Frutiger Aero's influence extended beyond UI design to diverse products in the late 00s and early 10s. Its playful style graced air conditioner vents, laundry detergents, and frozen yogurt branding. Spot it in Sims 3 character designs, Super Mario Galaxy, Xbox 360 controllers, and Fruit Ninja animations.

For their newest cooperation with Adidas, Clusterduck Collective worked together with XI Design to create a massive mural painting inspired by digital nostalgia in Wilmersdorfer Str. 81, 10629 Berlin (Kudam). Picking up on modern aesthetics shaping the digital and urban context such as Anti Style, Ignorant Drawing, and Frutiger Aero, Clusterduck shows the experience of a person who, while listening to music on her/his/their computer, visualizes nostalgic, happy, or trippy memories evoked by those sounds, blurring the boundaries between the physical (IRL, short for “In Real Life”) and the digital world (URL, “Uniform Resource Locator”, colloquially known as a web address) in the process. Since our online and offline activities are capable of changing our brains, for the better or worse, Clusterduck likes to remind us that maintaining a balance between the two worlds is crucial for our mental well-being!
